Joe Henry's Return by Marcia Melton

Joe Henry Grummond, who traveled with his father from Kentucky to Montana and back again, in Joe Henry's Journey, in 1862. Now, in 1866, there is nothing left in Kentucky for Joe's family, which is comprised of Joe, his father, his grandmother, two younger sisters, and John Abel, a disabled orphan who was once Joe's nemesis. They join a wagon train for the long journey northwest to return to Montana. With many adventures along the way, they meet with old friends and finally establish a home of their own in Montana Territory.
“Joe Henry returns stronger than ever in this rousing adventure story! Ride along with a brave teenage boy as he experiences friendship, triumph, hardship, and danger in early Montana Territory. - Vivian Winter Chaser, Si Cangu Lakota Educator and Storyteller.
This book has lots of adventures from beginning to end like when he got knocked out two times. The part when he got shot was scary because he blacked out and I wasn’t sure he was going to live.

Joe Henry’s Return is a great story for readers who are growing out of children’s books, but are not quite ready for YA novels. This is a heartwarming story, and is top notch for readers who are interested in that particular time period.
